Doodle #1 : A Different Kind of New Year's Kiss

3... 2... 1... Happy New Year! Two dogs get in the way of a couple when it's time to kiss.

Our dogs always try to get in the way when we want to kiss.

Happy New Year! Here's terrible doodle #1 which depicts me and my S.O. getting kiss-blocked by our doggos. They thought they deserved our first kisses of 2022.

It's okay though - we got some smooches in later.

Stay safe, stay warm, and stay creative, friends.

Comedians

Two stick figures on stage with a stool and a microphone are talking. The first says "did you hear the one about the two stand up guys who shared the stage right after 3 people performed and with 3 people performing after them?" The other stick figure says "They were co medians."

Five or six years ago, I briefly dated a stand up comedian. And let me tell you - even though it didn't work out, I learned a lot about bravery from this relationship. Seeing my S.O. and friends up on stage, even though they were scared, was inspiring.

Sometimes they did great; other times the crowd awkwardly chuckled or was silent. But each success or failure helped the comedians grow. Without getting up on that stage, they didn't make progress.

Anyway - that's what I'm doing here: getting up on the stage. Being brave and trying something new, even if I suck at it. Even if the audience is just a couple of friends that I send this link to.

I don't know where this quote originally came from, but it's definitely the theme of this blog.

A dark brown board has Scrabble tiles on it that read "Be brave enough to suck at something new."
"Be brave enough to suck at something new."

Venn do you go to bed?

A venn diagram where one circle says "Hours I should be asleep" and the other circle isn't a circle. It's squiggly, overlapping the circle in two places, and it says "my sleep schedule."

Because it's not 2022 yet, but I want to get in the habit of updating this regularly, I'm going to post a few sketches and doodles from the last few years until it's time to create new stuff.

One comic that I LOVE and found super inspiring is Indexed. This doodle was my first attempt at imitation (which I hope is flattering, even if it's not a great attempt).

FWIW, my sleep schedule has improved slightly over the last couple years, but it's still wonky.

Starting or Star-tea-ng?

One stick person says "You sure do drink a lot of tea." The other stick person, sitting in a cup of tea and typing on a computer, says "It's called Mo-tea-vation."

One stick person holds their hands to their face and says "Oh no... I forgot to buy tea yesterday!" The other stick person looks into a mug turned upside down and says "So that's why it's emp-tea."

Welcome to my 2022 New Year's Resolution: drawing one year of silly, pun-filled panels. I'm not an artist, so don't expect anything too intricate. This is just going to be an exercise in creativity. But, if you've stumbled upon this, I hope you find something that makes you smile (or groan - because let's face it: most of these are just going to be poorly illustrated dad jokes).

I grew up fighting my brother for control of the funnies pages in the paper, and I learned how to share over Calvin & Hobbes comic books. For the last... 18 years? I've escaped into and grown by reading amazing webcomics like

I love comics, but I've always been more of a consumer instead of a creator. Not sure I'm cut out for it, but you know what? Silly puns and simple doodles make me happy. So cheers to 2022 and a year of doing something just because I feel like it!
